Newfoundland is a breed of dog, originally from the island of the same name, originally a working dog, at the present time a dog is a lifeguard, helper, companion. In Russia, Newfoundlands are often called divers.

The breed was brought out by fishermen from the rocky island of Newfoundland, in dire need of a strong, calm and courageous dog, able to work in tandem with a man in severe northern conditions: pulling nets out of the water, carrying goods, throwing himself into the water, saving the drowning man.
