In het verleden was keeshond de mascotte van Nederlandse zeilers. De schepen waarop de honden voeren, keerden altijd terug naar hun haven. Als het zicht slecht is, blaft keeshond luid, wat de locatie van het schip aangeeft en helpt om botsingen met andere drijvende middelen te voorkomen.
