When part of the glacier goes far beyond the continent and begins to melt from below, chunks of ice break off from it and set sail for free on the seas and oceans. Drifting ice blocks are called icebergs (Eisberg), which in German means “ice mountain”. Interestingly, the visible part of the iceberg is only 10%, and the bulk of the ice floe is hidden in the water column.
The dimensions of the breakaway fragments of the glacier are impressive and striking.
