An eccentric American writer and reporter Ambrose Beers once joked that a tsetse fly bite is the best cure for insomnia. In the dark cynicism of literary genius there is a bitter truth: an insect bite really leads to sleeping sickness (African trypanosomiasis), which in many cases is fraught with death.
In the detachment of dipterans there are many blood-sucking insects that carry dangerous diseases, but hardly anyone can compare with tsetse in terms of bloodthirstiness and the extent of damage caused to the population and fauna of the African continent.
