Tu-22M on pikamaa pommitaja ning ka teine Tu-160 pommitaja, Tu-22M on varieeruv pühkimislatt.
Tu-22Mi loomine algas möödunud sajandi 60ndate keskel. Peale selle rahastas ettevõte algset tööd oma reservidest, mitte riigieelarvest. Nendel päevadel tuginesid nõukogude võimud rakettide arendamisele ja uute pikaealiste pommitajate arendamise rahastamine ei olnud selgelt partei juhtimiskavade osa.
